“This is my birthday present to me,” said Angela Fowler as we sat around her dining room table, talking about Witches Hollow.

The original event started in the 70’s, although no one remembers it, and later was brought back in the 80’s as Witches Haven, but last year a new group of people, headed by Angela, decided to start again, using the original name. Witches Hollow is a FREE community event, held on Halloween Night. Their goal is to scare children and send them home with copious amounts of sugar…also to “enhance a sense of community by providing a free public event.”

Witches Hollow will include Zombie Crossing Guards, a Werewolf, your average Ghosts, Ghoulies, Monsters & Witches, a Story Teller Grave Digger and more! There will also be contests to be announced at the event with great prizes!

The businesses and individuals that have made this possible have helped create a fantastic event for kids in Downtown Kelso, Washington.

Angela and her helpers, which include the Coffin County Slaughter Kittens (a local Roller Derby Team) actually started planning this one-night-event in February. They have spent countless hours creating props and planning costumes and makeup.

On October 15, 2011 there will be a Kelso Cleanup in preparation of this SPOOKtacular event. DECA will join The Witches Hollow Team in making sure that South Pacific is cleaned up. The Commons Park on the corner of South Pacific and Oak Street has to be pressure washed to make sure the ground is not slippery.

Set up for Witches Hollow will take all day. Starting bright and early at 7 am on Monday October 31, 2011 the team will begin by making sure the park is still clean and then…let the decorating begin.

By 2 pm make-up and costumes will begin to be put together; some of the costumes are quite elaborate. By 5 pm trick-or-treaters from all over Kelso-Longview are expected. Businesses for a 2 block radius are encouraged to stay open late and be a safe place for kids to trick-or-treat. As a perk the spookiest storefront will win a $100 gift certificate from Exclaim Media, LLC.

Nearby at First Baptist Church of Kelso, there will be a Free Chili Feed for all who can make it. Parents have organized “Trunk” or Treating in the parking lot to provide another safe alternative to trick-or-treating in the dark neighborhood.

At 9 pm, after families have gone home on a sugar high, clean up will last well into the night. Angela says she doesn’t expect to be home until at least 1 am.

It isn’t too late to be part of the fun! Please contact Angela Fowler if you have resources to contribute (that includes body parts…alive or plastic) at (360) 578-1339. You can also Find Witches Hollow on Facebook. (Make sure to check out the pictures! Wow!)

Exclaim Media, LLC enjoyed helping with PSA’s, working with Minuteman Press to get flyers printed and other businesses to collect prizes for contest winners. Look for this event on CowlitzToday.com. If you haven’t joined our eClub for weekly blasts that include this event and others like it should. See our Events page to learn more..
