Last week was Salvation Army week; the annual meeting was May 16, 2012 and all the stops were pulled for a grand party.
Guests arrived and were greeted by most of the Advisory Board Members & Staff: Agnes Staggs, Beverly Gilmore, Bobbie Costa, Captain Dave, Captain Lola, Caroll Hope, Hal Palmer, Holly McWain, Janice Hillman, Karen Deutsch, Keath Huff, Lonnie Knowles, Mary Chamberlain, Noelle McLean, Richard Woods, Summer Clemenson, Susan Lanham and Wayne Cain (we missed Cal Dowd and Duane Nordstrom) . The tables were set with beautiful flowers and each spot was decorated with a gift for each person: A magnet with the words “A man may be down but he’s never out” and wooden coin with William Booth’s likeness on it. We had a lovely lunch served to us by Canterbury Gardens; Chef’s Salad, Garlic Bread & Fresh Strawberry Cake!
Outgoing Chair, Hal Palmer led the event with style as Incoming Chair, Dick Woods asked a blessing. Ours and hearts were blessed by Amazing Grace sung by, Exclaim Media’s, Summer Clemenson.
Captain Dave brought us to attention while quoting William Booth: While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight; while little children go hungry, as they do now, I’ll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight; while there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight-I’ll fight to the very end!
We were reminded that Salvation Army is a church first and all the services they offer from child to senior citizen, providing hot meals 5 days per week, helping with housing, food boxes and many other services are because of their faith in God.
Karen was excited to have cameras rolling, and to have a chance to wear her Salvation Army hat with pride.
After new officers were sworn in we had a lively speech from Lee Stiles, who came all the way to Longview from Department Headquarters, in Seattle.
Wayne Cain brought the lovely lunch to close with a beautiful prayer. We can’t wait till next year to see what they put together.
