In November we had the privilege to promote the first Christmas Angel Telethon and what an undertaking that was. We were so excited to have raised over $3000 for Salvation Army in Longview, WA. During the 24 hours we were there making magic happen we began to drag. We were so thankful when Pizza Hut came in with over $100 worth of food. This food was great and fed all the help and performers. In the wee hours of the morning we needed something other than pizza and in came a lovely lady with some fresh fruit, cheese and crackers and some other wonderful items that fueled and kept us going.
A week later we were glad to be seated across the table from Karinsa Viramontes, founder of Dino Doozer Foundation. What had began as a simple thank you and the possibility to learn more about what she does over coffee had turned into a 3 1/2 hour event where we met one of the strongest women we have had the chance to meet.
As Karinsa opened up to us we learned that her son, Sherod Don Nichols, nicknamed Doozer, was the reason for Dino Doozer Foundation. He was a bright shining star in her life. Sherod lived with Neurofibromatosis (NF) which is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow in the nervous system. This disorder does not kill you but it does cause pain, deformity and essentially isolation due to the rarity of the disorder. Another side effect of NF is a greater chance of becoming a victim of rare cancers. This is what took Sherod away from his mother.
As he became a teenager and was at the same time losing the ability to walk due to the tumors that were growing at the base of his spine. His attitude was getting more negative until he had the chance to go to a special camp in Virginia; Camp New Friends. For an entire week, Sherod was normal. He came back to his family a changed person. His dying wish was that his life insurance would be used to send other kids with NF to camp.
Dino Doozer Foundation supports families with children with NF and cancer. In 2010 they were able to send 3 kids to Camp New Friends.
